Pets on Quilts – My “Firsts”

This is my first dog snoozing on my first quilt! I am linking this up to Lily Pad Quilts annual Pets on Quilts show in the caetgory “Dog on Quilt”.

Shep was 15 when this photo was taken only a few weeks after I completed the colourful flannel rag quilt – my first quilt project. The quilt turned out smaller than I expected and didn’t work well as our “cuddle up and watch movies” quilt like I had hoped. Shep was getting old and frail so I had taken to laying the soft quilt out in whichever room I was in so that he could lie down and be nearby. He passed away sleeping peacefully on it not long after this photo was taken.

When our vet arrived to take Shep to the crematorium he brought along an ugly, scratchy orange blanket to wrap him in. I opted to have Shep wrapped up in my quilt instead. My first dog, first quilt, first real heartbreak losing this big old guy.

Ok, now I am feeling all teary-eyed! Tomorrow I promise to post a more light-hearted Pets On Quilts photo of our current dog, Maui, who is a stubborn, but cute, bundle of energy! Stay tuned and be sure to link up your photos to Pets on Quilts too!

  1. It is so hard to say good-bye to these sweethearts. I’ve done the same thing, wrapping them in some love as they go. I’m glad to hear you have a new critter to cheer you. Shep will always have that same place in your heart.

    • Thanks Loris. At first I thought I was being ridiculous to send the quilt away – I had only recently finished it! But my husband and the vet said it was a fitting gesture and I really wanted something special to go with Shep.

  2. Funny how when they get old you baby them even more that when they were puppies. Shep was well loved and looked after, his quilt looked really comfy!

  3. Beautiful photo of your old friend. Struck a cord (tear) for me as we had to put our old dog down last year…this was such a hard task and I am not sure I am over that.

    • Hi Karin. My condolences on the loss of your dog. It definitely takes a good while to heal – and of course we never forget them. It has been six years now since Shep died but it was quite a while before I didn’t think of him every day. They are such a huge part of our lives.

  4. Helloooo ~ Let me introduce myself, I am Sweet William The Scot, and I am taking the tour of the quilts. I am more of a dog blogger, but I have made three quilts in my lifetime.
I am so glad you chose to have Shep wrapped in the quilt sewed with your love. I am sure he has it at the Rainbow Bridge with him.

    • Hi Sweet William. Thank you for stopping by – and for taking the time to comment. Hopefully Shep and his new friends over the rainbow are all taking comfort from my quilt and using it as a soft sleeping spot πŸ™‚

  5. Hi! Your photo of Shep on his quilt is adorable and Shep looks so beautiful! I’m sorry to hear that he’s not anymore with you. He looks like mix of our Nero and Hanna. x Teje

    • Thank you for your comment Teje. I found your blog a few weeks ago when searching for quilts made with mens shirts – yours are fantastic! – and I thought immeditaley that your dogs look a lot like my Shep. Good luck in the contest!

  6. Me again πŸ™‚ Thanks for leaving such nice comments on my pet post! It came no- reply though so I thought I would just pop back here for it. This has been a fun parade!

    • Hi Loris, thanks for your note. I am so new to blogging and this “no-reply” seems to be an ongoing problem. From what I understand it is because I am on WordPress as opposed to Blogger. Gah! Thanks for taking the extra time to come back here to comment and good luck with your entry. This has been fun and was a great first launch into my blog!

  7. So sorry for your loss….just went through that here, about nine months ago. Your heart just aches, doesn’t it? Thank you for sharing at our party!

    • Sorry for your loss too. It is hard and only a fellow pet owner can really understand. This has been a great event for geeting to know fellow quilters and pet owners – seems there are a lot of us πŸ™‚
